Mission Statement

The Artificial Intelligence Governance Unit (AIGU) coordinates and supports the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the Public Administration by providing governance, strategic guidance and practical assistance. Its role is to promote the lawful, secure, transparent and consistent use of AI in line with national priorities.

Background

The AIGU operates within the Office of the Prime Minister under the leadership of the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO). It was established by the Principal Permanent Secretary as the central function for the governance aspects of AI adoption within the Public Administration, in response to the growing use of these technologies and the need for a consistent approach to how they are assessed, governed and deployed.

The AIGU acts as a central point of reference for the Public Administration on AI-related governance, policy, operational and technical matters, supporting the responsible adoption, governance and progression of AI initiatives. The Unit also supports the Artificial Intelligence Governance Council (AIGC) in carrying out its functions, with its work guided by the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), the national measures adopted for its implementation and applicable governmental policies.
