Overview
The Data Governance Unit (DGU) operates within the Office of the Prime Minister and is led by the Chief Data Officer (CDO). It was established to strengthen the strategic management, interoperability, and quality of data across the Public Administration. The DGU serves as the central authority for data governance, ensuring that data assets are effectively managed, securely shared, and aligned with national and EU-level policies.
Vision
To foster a data-driven public administration that is transparent, efficient, and responsive to the needs of citizens and stakeholders through robust governance frameworks and collaborative data stewardship.
Mission
To lead and coordinate data governance initiatives across Ministries, Departments, and Public Sector Entities by:
- Promoting the classification, shareability, and interoperability of datasets.
- Ensuring compliance with national legislation and EU regulations.
- Facilitating the implementation of data strategies and standards.
- Supporting the development and maintenance of national data portals and registers.
- Enhancing data quality, accessibility, and reusability across government.
Remit
The DGU’s remit includes:
- Strategic Coordination: Overseeing the alignment of data governance activities with national priorities and international obligations.
- Operational Oversight: Managing daily operations of the Unit aimed at assisting stakeholders about compliance to data regulations.
- Policy Implementation: Contributing to the formulation and execution of data-related policies, instruction notes, and reports.
- Project Leadership: Leading data related initiatives and serve as the supporting function of the Data Governance Council.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth coordination and implementation of data governance activities.
- Quality Assurance: Monitoring data quality, ensuring datasets are up-to-date, correctly stored, and meet required standards.

The DGU is led by the Chief Data Officer and operates under the strategic guidance of the Data Governance Council, which includes representatives from key entities having a stake in Data Governance throughout Public Administration
